There are a variety of herbs that have the power to support the prostate and reduce inflammation and disorders that are so often associated with it. One of the best herbs is pygeum.
What is Pygeum?
Pygeum is an herb derived from the bark of the evergreen tree called Prunus Africana. It grows strictly in the sub-Saharan plains of Africa. Its use dates by to the 1700s when it was used to help heal urinary tract infections. Its Greek name is Pygeum, which is derived from the word ‘buttock’ as it is round in shape. Researchers working with the herb have discovered a few vital phytochemical constituents in Pygeum including phytosterols, triterpenes, and ferulic esters. Well known to reduce swelling in the body, this powerful herb has been used for centuries to protect the body from illnesses and to counteract unpleasant side-effects like swelling. It is also rich in antioxidants and has been used in the west since the 1960s to treat various ailments.
Pygeum and Prostate health
Pygeum bark has been highly scrutinized by the medical community. Researchers have done various studies that point to the power this herb can have in healing the prostate. In placebo controlled studies, the prostate disorder known as BPH, patients given Pygeum experienced double the relief from enlarged prostate symptoms than those who were given the placebo. The best part is there are little to no side effects reported from taking Pygeum bark as an herb. In other studies, daytime urinary frequency was reduced by 16% thanks to the herb.
When it comes to prostate cancer, Pygeum bark has shown encouraging results in studies. Researchers have discovered that an active ingredient in Pygeum bark known as atraric acid, imparts significant therapeutic relief to those suffering with cancer. In fact, this component has been known to send androgen signals to the prostate that can decrease or even halt its growth. Researchers believe that this can have the same impact on cancer cells and even promote cancer cell death.
