What is Physiologic Leukorrhea?
Physiologic Leukorrhea is a condition many women and girls experience. Typically presenting within several months to even a year before the onset of menstruation, and sometimes presenting in newborn girls, the condition lasts for up to two months. Conversely, in some cases Leukorrhea is a sign of infection—particularly when the discharge is either yellow or green and comes with an offensive odor.
Other symptoms of the condition include inflammatory Leukorrhea, irritation, itching, pain, and even a white solid discharge coming from the vagina.
Causes of Leukorrhea
Leukorrhea can be a sign of infection. Most cases are not cause for concern, but if you are experiencing itching, discomfort, irritation and odor, then you may have a vaginal infection causing the Leukorrhea. Physiologic Leukorrhea on the other hand, is caused by an estrogen imbalance.
Women who are pregnant, going through menopause, or adolescents approaching their first period, are at most risk for the condition. An increase in estrogen levels can cause the rapid likelihood of developing Leukorrhea because the vagina has a natural defense mechanism that protects the reproductive system when an estrogen imbalance occurs. Too much estrogen sets in motion Leukorrhea and the discomfort it causes.
A few other causes of this condition include diabetes, anemia, poor personal hygiene, trauma or injury to the vagina can also cause Leukorrhea.
